Boxing: Canelo v Golovkin: What are the predictions of Mayweather, Marquez, Hopkins, Saunders and others?

With Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin ready to do battle again on Saturday night, many of boxing’s big names a have been making their predictions.

The bout will take place late on Saturday – or the early hours of Sunday morning for those tuning in from Europe, starting from 02:00.

We’ve gathered the opinions of a lot of notable names, and the majority of them are predicting a Canelo win.

Juan Manuel Marquez

“It’s sure to be a motivation for Canelo that he lost to Dmitry Bivol because another loss wouldn’t be good for him.

“In the second fight with Golovkin he can beat him. He figured out his style and his speed, his counterattacks and his combinations.

Golovkin won’t be able to withstand what Canelo comes at him with.”

Bernard Hopkins

“I’m going for Canelo, he’ll get over the line. We know GGG is one punch away from a win and that’s why he’s here, but I think we’ll see a lot of punches in this.”

Floyd Mayweather??

Canelo is going to step up after losing and he’ll do what he has to do,” Mayweather told Fighthype.

Ryan Garcia

“I think whoever loses this fight is going to have to retire. I feel like Golovkin will put on an amazing fight. Of course he’s got Canelo up against him, but I have a feeling he’ll put in the performance of his life and he’ll win.”

Billy Joe Saunders

“Age is a big factor now. Golovkin 40 years old now and you can’t expect him to go back five years to his prime. I’m backing a Canelo win, maybe by KO in the eighth to 12th rounds.”

Amir Khan

Canelo is at the peak of his career. He’s strong, has power and speed. I think he’ll knock Golovkin out. Without disrespecting GGG, I think we have to remember he’s got a lot of years on the clock.”

Carl Frampton

“Golovkin knocked out Ryota Murata in their last fight, but he wasn’t looking good from the start. I’d like to see him win, but I think this’ll be Canelo‘s most decisive result, given where both of their careers are now.”
