Week after week, Kylian Mbappe is used to stealing the limelight. Sometimes the player wants to be the central character by recalling the Real Madrid dream that could have come but he choose to not fulfil.
On other occasions, however, details about the length of the contract he signed back in May with Paris Saint-Germain were leaked.
The Frenchman’s strategy is more than familiar, but this time Real Madrid are not willing to abide. There are doubts about the length of the deal and when the summer comes around again there will be talk about Real Madrid‘s interest.
The situation has changed a lot. Mbappe made his decision, exercising his right to extend his contract, but there will be consequences. Only he knows if he regrets it or not, but 150 million euros gross per season is not going to be paid to sign him.
Not to mention the famous signing bonus. No other team are going to come close to that figure, nor to his demands, nor is he going to fall for the strategy designed so the PSG Qatari owners end up putting as many zeros as possible on the contract. Even if he is released on June 30, 2024, no one will dare to approach the French striker again.
His decision was a question of figures, of money. The same happened with Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid. He asked for his salary to be increased and Real Madrid’s directors could not and would not enter into an auction that ended with the Portuguese forward joining Juventus and then moving to Manchester United, but with CR7 knocking on a door that is already closed.
These are decisions which could be understandable when in 2017 Mbappe was barely 18 years old and featuring in a Real Madrid side that boasted stars such as Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo in top form could seem an impossible challenge. But five years later, they have left a stain that will never be removed.
The Frenchman will find it more than difficult to leave Paris one day. The Portuguese star had the opportunity and let it escape. Mbappe could have had it, but gave everything up in exchange for money.
Real Madrid will not expect anything from Mbappe, nor from Erling Haaland, no matter what the Norwegian striker’s buyout clause is. If they can afford signing them, it will be studied, but they are not going to sacrifice everything for them.
