Jackie Groenen’s agent Guido Albers has claimed that Manchester United didn’t cooperate during the transfer process that eventually saw the Dutch midfielder join Paris Saint-Germain and was critical of the WSL club for failing to deliver on promises made in 2019.
United had no intention of selling Groenen, who had entered the final year of her contract. But an offer came from PSG that was too good to turn down in the circumstances, even though the WSL transfer window had already closed and it was impossible to sign a replacement.
There was longstanding interest from PSG, but United boss Marc Skinner admitted that the club had refused to take much notice until an actual offer was submitted.
“In all honesty, it was not until that point that the offer came in that it was acceptable for us to even think about letting Jackie go,” Skinner explained.
“We had interest prior but it was beyond the [WSL transfer deadline] when we actually got a deal that will help us build into the future plans as well. That’s the reality of it. Of course conversations [happen] but unless people show their true intent, you don’t take them seriously.”
Speaking to NOS, Albers, who also formerly represented Donny van de Beek, said, “There has been a lot of uncertainty and Manchester United have not really cooperated.”
“When she signed with Manchester United, they had promised to build a team to reach European football within a year after promotion to the highest level in England.”
“Then I said: ‘Jackie came here with this ambition and she did everything she could. Now it comes down to the recognition’. In the end someone from the board said: ‘We have to deal with such an amount [for a player with one year left on their contract].’”
Groenen had first joined United in 2019, shortly before a starring role at that summer’s World Cup and quickly became a fan favourite. But the team finished fourth in the WSL in each of her three seasons there, twice narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification.
