Mexico earthquakes: What were the magnitudes of the three telluric movements of September 19?

September 19 is a dark date in Mexico. With today’s earthquake of 7.7 on the Richter scale, the country has already had three earthquakes on that same date. One in 1985, another in 2017 and now in 2022. The first two with devastating results both for Mexico City and other cities in the national territory.

1985 Earthquake – 8.1

The 8.1 magnitude earthquake woke up the country at 7:17 a.m., leaving an uncountable death toll, with an estimated 10,000 fatalities. The areas affected by the earthquake were central, southern and western Mexico, particularly Mexico City. So far it has been one of the most significant and damaging in the contemporary history of the country.

The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, near the mouth of the Balsas River, on the coast of the state of Michoacn, and the hypocenter, 15 kilometers deep under the earth’s crust.

2017 Earthquake – 7.1

32 years later history repeated itself again in Mexico. This earthquake was recorded at 13:14 hours, and had a magnitude of 7.1 Richter. It left 369 people dead, of which 228 were from Mexico City, 74 from Morelos, 45 from Puebla, 15 from the State of Mexico, 6 from Guerrero and one from Oaxaca.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Morelos, just 120 kilometers south of Mexico City

Five years later, when a drill was being carried out, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred. The number of people affected is unknown.
