Barcelona enjoyed a dominant win over Almeria at the Camp Nou on Saturday night, showing their attacking prowess with a record-number of shots on goal. The 27 attempts (13 on target) is a new high for the Blaugrana this season.
If not for a solid performance from Almeria goalkeeper Fernando Martinez, the scoreline could have been much higher than the modest 2-0 it finished. Goals from Ousmane Dembele and Frenkie de Jong were enough to ensure Gerard Pique said farewell to the Camp Nou with a win.
Prior to this game, Barcelona‘s record for shots on goal this season was 25, which they managed against Elche and against Inter. As for shots on target, the previous high was 11 against both Inter and Viktoria Plzen.
So it was the attack that stole the show on Pique‘s farewell night in a game where the hosts had 70 percent possession. As things stand, with Real Madrid having played a game fewer, Barcelona are the team with most goals in LaLiga Santander with 31 to Real Madrid‘s 29.
Leaders… for now
The win against Almeria also allowed the Catalans to go top of the table, for two nights at least, with Los Blancos due to play Rayo Vallecano on Monday.
A win for Carlo Ancelotti‘s side in Vallecas would restore their status as league leaders ahead of the final matchday before the World Cup. Matchday 14 runs from Tuesday to Thursday and then LaLiga Santander won’t resume until the end of December.
