Boxing: Canelo Alvarez has plans to fight in May, but if Bivol doesn’t want to: “there are more things to do”

Saul Canelo Alvarez has had a good recovery from left hand surgery, the Mexican champion feels so good that he has already set a goal of fighting in May 2023 against Dmitry Bivol.

Bivol comes from dominating and defeating another Mexican, Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, there had been talk that the winner of that fight would go against Canelo, but at the end of the fight the Russian said that he is not interested in a rematch against Alvarez, what he wants is to sweep the 175 pounds.

Canelo will not wait for Bivol

Canelo Alvarez underwent surgery on his left hand, that injury prevented him from going 100 percent in his last two fights, against Bivol and against Gennady Golovkin. The Mexican was expected to be out of the ring for a year, but his recovery has progressed well and he could bring forward his return to the ring to May.

“The doctor at first had told me that I had to be four weeks with the cast without moving it after the surgery. When he came in and saw inside, everything I had and what he did to me, he said it was better than we expected, that I should only be in the cast for seven days, then remove the stitches and begin rehabilitation. I’ve been in rehab for two weeks now,” Canelo told Bet365.

“The first half of the fight I did very well and then came the overwhelm because we didn’t do training as it should be, especially in a bigger division where you have to be carrying it more, they are heavier. That’s what we’ll be looking for, the rematch. If he don’t wants to fight, there are more things to do,” he said.

Canelo Alvarez expects to return in May

Mexico’s patriotic weekends usually feature big boxing functions: the Cinco de Mayo weekend or Mexican Independence weekend. Aztec fighters have adopted those two dates to fight and Canelo has been no exception.

“My scars have already closed, I’m doing therapy very well, so I don’t think it’s going to stop me that much,” commented Saul Alvarez. “My fights are always in May or September. I think I’ll be ready for May again”.
